[comp.sys.apple] //GS Case Too Small

jim@felix.UUCP (05/11/87)

I have a II+ and a //GS.

Does anyone know *WHY* Apple, in their infinite wisdom, designed the
//GS mechanical package around 1/4 " too short to hold long II, II+
and //e boards?

I have both a PCPI Applicard (which fairly flies with the 6 MHZ Z-80
supported by a 2.8 MHZ 65816 doing the I/O) and my own wirewrap
68008 coprocessor on a long prototyping card. Neither of these boards
will fit in the //GS case. They extend about 1/4" past where the
metal shielding and plastic front wall are. Apple appears to
have created more room between the back of the bus connectors and the
back wall, thereby making getting cables in easier. It is difficult for
me to comprehend, however, why they did not bother verifying that they
had the mechanical space for the PCPI board, which was one of the more
popular CP/M boards.

So, I can use these boards with the lid off, the monitor sitting beside
the box and an extender card holding the board up in the air. Sigh, what
a kludge! If I had had a //e, instead of a II+ the upgrade to a GS would
have been the way to go, at least the //e case would accept my long boards.

I think this was just an oversight on Apple's part. Since I can detect no
visible signs of them attempting to kill other add-on CP/M boards.

Does anyone at Apple dare respond?
