[comp.sys.apple] disk II and IIGS

I have a GS with a disk II w/contoller plugged into slot 6.
I also have a 3.5" unidisk plugged into the smart port on the
back of the machine. My control panel is set to scan for a
device to boot from. The problem: when there is no disk in the
disk II the machine will not move on to the 3.5 and boot from
there. The disk II just keeps on spinning. Is there a way to
make the GS continue scanning for a startup device when there is
no disk in the disk II? The local Apple dealer says it is not
supposed work this way. It is interesting to note that I can go
into the control panel on boot and then immediately exit from
the control panel and this will work??!! The GS will attempt to
boot from the disk II and will continue scanning for a startup
disk/device if there is no disk in the disk II -- just like I
want it to. Again the disk II is slot 6 drive 1 and the 3.5 disk
is slot 5 drive 1. If you have the 5.25" Unidisk daisy chained
to the 3.5" ( no disk II attached anywhere), things work fine just
like they say in the manual. Any ideas??

Your problem is the old ROM on disk II controller card. It doesn't have
any provisions for a "timeout" like the Unidisk 5.25 controller has.
Because your Disk II controller won't ever give up trying to find a disk,
you can't make it try. You'll need a Unidisk 3.5 controller, or convert
the plug on your Disk II drive so it can plug into the smartport.
