[comp.sys.apple] //gs owner-to-be wants to know some things

mkao@pnet01.CTS.COM (Mike Kao) (05/30/87)

I am going to purchase an Apple //GS in the near future. My intended setup
will be:

        //gs
        Analog RGB
        Imagewriter II
        2 3.5" drives
        1 5.25"

Is there anything I should know about them now? I have not followed all the
modifications/updates for a while now and would appreciate any words of wisdom
on this subject.

Some misc. questions:

        WHERE could I get the best package deal?
        WHAT kind of RAM card is best?
        Are there any BETTER/CHEAPER drives (both 3.5 and 5.25) other than the
                ones that Apple produces?
        Are the bugs all corrected now (like the video chip)?
        Is there enough software out there now to make a GS worth it?
        Are there any new incompatibility problems between //gs's and the
                //e's?

I would really appreciate any and all responses on this subject. I know a lot
has happened in the //gs world since I stopped "following" the news on it, so
I'd like to be informed before I buy.

To insure my reception of any replies to any of my posts, please reply via mail instead of replying through the board.

As for buying a //gs system, I would recommend a different monitor. There
is nothing wrong with Apple's RGB monitor, but it is too expensive for
what you get. The Sony KV 1311 CR retails for the same price, has as
larger screen, a TV Tuner and speaker, and a remote control. They also
have a cheaper model, 1310, I think, without the TV tuner. This monitor
works great with the //gs. There were instructions for building the cable
for the 1311 CR in a recent Computer Shopper, May 87 to be exact. If you
cant get a May Computer Shopper, call Don Lancaster at Synergetics:
(602) 428-4073. He will send a reprint for a modest fee.
