Well, I think I'm going to take the plunge and by a //GS. Two questions I seek opinions and knowledge on: 1) What hard disk should I buy? I don't have tremedous requirements, 20 MB should be fine. Apple drives are expensive, Sider's are not, but what else do I need to consider? What other brands should I be thinking about? 2) What do I need to look for in memory chips for expanding memory? What access time, what chip numbers, vendors, price, etc. It appears that I will be getting a package that includes the Apple memory expansion card. Any advice on these areas would be greatly appreciated. Replies can be sent to mcgurrin@mitre.arpa. Thanks!

Re: memory expansion chips. Based on one person's experience (mine) you have to be careful in getting chips to go in the Apple GS memory board. I went down to the local discount electronics place and got chips that seemed to ahve all the same part numbers, including whatever code it was that specified the speed, but they didn't work. Ended up buyingthem from the dealer afterall. Don't know why the one's I bought didn't work.

In regard to the hard disk issue, be aware of a problem with Apple's SCSI support of 20 MB hard disks. I have a II-GS with an Apple SCSI card in slot 7 with two (yes 2) Apple HD20 disks on the SCSI interface. The second disk is totally unusable (!) due to what now appears to be operating system software problems (although the problem is far from fully diagnosed). Apple tech support is being brought into the loop by my dealer (after over two months of frustration), but in the meantime I have a $1000 albatross hanging around my neck. Be wary of quotes from Apple documentation about their HD20s. Cheers, Bud Huber P.S., I sure hope Apple reads this message also!

I heartily recommend getting a Jasmine Direct Drive 20 for your //gs. It was originally designed for the Mac, but since it's true SCSI, it will work fine in ProDOS on a GS. Also, the specifications are better than Apple's drive AND it's under $600! To insure my reception of any replies to any of my posts, please reply via mail instead of replying through the board. ____________________________________________________________________________ | | | Mike "The Metalhead" Kao: | | | | UUCP: {akgua,hp-sdd!hlpabs,sdcsvax,nosc}!crash!pnet01!mkao | | ARPA: crash!pnet01!mkao@nosc.arpa | | INET: mkao@pnet01.CTS.COM | |____________________________________________________________________________|
