Lightning recently fried our television, surge protector and PKASO printer interface. Does anyone have suggestions as to the relative benefits of repairing the board, replacing the board , suggestions for replacements? Thank you. Christine Schlichting Schlichting@NUSC.arpa ------

I lost a lot of semiconductor equipment in my home several years ago. Stereos, TV, Timer motor on washer, Ground Fault Interrupter. I had insurance which would replace. Those items which I tried to repair, never worked entirely satisfactorily. if economically possible replace. John

In reference to repairing a lightning fried parallel printer board. I had a similar experience a few years back. I changed all of the chips on the board (8 of 'em) for about $5 the ROM was in good shape. The board is still running without a hitch. If the board has socketed chips you can easily do this. Just write down the numbers and get them at a local parts house. If the board has programable chips like PALs and ROMs, you may have to get them from the manufacturer, if they are bad. Try changing the regular TTL stuff first. If the chips are soldered in, as most are these days, see what the manufacturer charges for repairs. Unless you are very good with a solering iron, you may be better off to trash the board and buy a new one for $50. Rick Fincher ranger@ecsvax

Christine, the chances of fixing a truly fried printer board at a cost comparable to buying a newer, better, one are pretty small. Your local service technician would have to be a relative whiz, or just replace all the chips wholesale, including ROMs that may no longer be available. And even replacing the chips may not do it, because the fry job might have included PC traces as well. Invest in something new.
