I said a few years ago on another network that Simak's WAY STATION would probably make an excellent film---enough descriptive material that would be scenes (rather than running time) that everything in the book could fit in a reasonable-length film, very good story, many dramatic scenes (with quiet ones to balance), well-organized (the book has two intros, of which the first might be dropped and the second would be a good lead-in, plus assorted flashbacks that could be set up wonderfully if people didn't gag over a cue of a man sitting down to his journal). I also thought that Coppola would direct it well, especially after THE CONVERSATION, but what I've seen of THE OUTSIDERS suggest he's either lost his touch or lost control to the sentimentalists.
