Warning: The new Indiana Jones movie contains scenes of *very* extreme physical violence (what you might expect in an extreme horror movie) and violence against children that, I think, might be highly disturbing to young children, say, under 12. The next article contains a description of the scene I worry about, which I'm told almost got the movie an "R" rating. Review: I was quite disappointed by "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom". It is an inferior sequel; a selection of the crasser parts of the first IJ, with large amounts of horror added. Yes, it keeps you on the edge of your seat, virtually all the time (I looked at my watch once, maybe twice-- when the break-neck action was patently just more of the same) but it has very little of the sense of humour of the first movie, and even less character development or plot (as hard as that is to imagine). It is also amazingly sexist. Still, it "delivers the goods" by keeping the adrenalin pumping and giving the occasional laugh. But there really are too many cliches (can you believe they actually put a *long* roller coaster ride in?) and none of the sense of humour that gave us the end of IJ #1 with the Ark lost in a sea of red tape. If you have a limited budget for summer movies, put this one on the bottom of your list. And if you want to take your children, it might be wise to see it for yourself first, quite seriously-- this is very strong stuff. p. rowley, U. Toronto
