;7$+g) S#)n0u5%a3 $[$2~ U1;7$+g) S#)n0u5%a3 $[$2~ NOTE: This could be the last article you read in this news group about software copy protecting. I recently posted an article in my favorite news group suggesting that copy protect issues might be better handled in a new news.group. It was suggested that someone needed to get the ball rolling to create a new news.group called comp.copy-protect. I realize that I take my life in my hands, however, I am hereby calling for a vote of all net.landians. THE VOTE- Yes or no, Should we start a new news group called comp.copy-protect? On the positive side - We can get the news groups like comp.sys.brand talking about brand computers instead of how much we hate Copy Protection. I think we are all having to hit 'n' far too often nowadays. On the negative side - Having a news group specifically for this discussion may end up cutting down on the exposure that this subject gets. This could reduce any (possible) effect on publishers by cutting down on the squeeky wheel noise. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Bet you didn't know i had such a finely tuned devils advocate!!!! ;-) Please mail your votes to me (remember Al Franken?) and I will tally and resubmit them to the net.gods. I can be reached at zehntel!donw. If you don't have a path to me in your /etc/path then try to get to me through berkeley (i.e. berkeley!zehntel!donw) Failing a net connection, try a post card to Don White re: comp.copy-protect P.O. 271177 Concord CA. 94527-1177 P.S. Suggestions for other groups to mail this to, (besides comp.sys.amiga), should be mailed to me to prevent multiple postings. Thanx, donw P.P.S So far I have about a dozen and a half votes from that first news group. (comp.sys.amiga) votes are 65% FOR the new group. P.P.P.S. Thanks for your help Bryce. =========================================================================== disclaimer - If I'm not responsible and you're not responsible, then who's flying the plane?!?!?... Oh ma gosh!!

Well, for one thing, it would probably be called talk.copy-protect, or or something to that effect. -- John Knutson {ihnp4,allegra,ut-sally}!ut-ngp!auscso!knutson6 "I see everything once!" -- Catch-22

I don't see what's to discuss. Everyone should agree to stop buying copy-protected software other than perhaps stand-alone entertainment software, since one cannot simply install it on one's hard disk in a suitable directory like it should be. Also, send a note to the software publishers than use copy- protection telling them why you don't buy their products (Electronic Arts, Activision, and Broderbund are the three big offenders), and send a note to the reasonable publishers (Beagle, Apple, Penguin, etc.) telling them how much you appreciate their policy and that you will gladly cooperate with protecting their investment by not ripping them off.

comp.society.copy-protect would be a better name. -len -- Len Tower, Distributed Systems Group, Boston University, 111 Cummington Street, Boston, MA 02215, USA +1 (617) 353-2780 Home: 36 Porter Street, Somerville, MA 02143, USA +1 (617) 623-7739 UUCP: {}!harvard!bu-cs!tower INTERNET: tower@bu-cs.bu.edu
