Went to see the new Spielberg/Lucas blockbuster. I was dissapointed. It wasn't nearly as good as I remember Raiders to be. For starters, there was no character development. In fact, I think that Indiana's character was UNdeveloped. He sure acted like an ass at times. I cared what happened to him in Raiders. I didn't really care about him here. The female lead, Willie Wazzername (Kate Capshaw), was a bimbo. I didn't think anybody could put a character like that in a film these days and get away with it. She was the most useless character since Ann Francis in Forbidden Planet. I mean, if you're going to have a love interest, give her some flesh, blood, and guts (Marion sure had 'em!). If all you want is a cardboard cutout, don't even put her in. I could see NO reason that Indiana dragged her along. He could and should have left her in Shanghai. She was in no danger, and she didn't want to go with him anyway. He basically kidnapped her, so that the movie would have some sex in it. The kid, Short Round, was a decent character. He was a smartass, sure, but he was what you'd expect from a Shanghai street urchin. I would have prefered it if the kid was the only supporting character. It was obvious that Indy cared a lot more about him than he did about the woman. There WERE some visceral thrills in the movie, especially the bugs and the mine car ride sequences. The scene in the bar at the beginning was fun even though there was a great deal of shooting in it. The meal sequence was not put there to thrill or horrify the audience, just to gross them out. In fact, it seemed as though a lot of scenes were put there to disgust. I will admit to being on the edge of my seat during a few scenes, though. I would recommend that parents who are contemplating sending their kids see it first alone. Some of this is nightmare material: the bugs, the human sacrifice, the ripping of hearts out of chests, the giant vampire bats. On a scale of $ to $$$$, I'd give it a $ 1/2 or $$. Too bad I paid $4.50 to see it. I'm not too upset, though. It's given me something to rip into, if nothing else.
