[comp.sys.apple] Looking for a good terminal emulator for the Apple //

hiosrc@ms3.UUCP (09/18/87)

I'm looking for a decent VT100 emulator for my enhanced Apple //e. I've
tried DCOM -- its OK for 'vi' and other light applications, but our
Office Automation software blows it away (I wrote to the author once
asking about limitations & future improvements, but he never returned my
letter).

Is it even possible for an Apple //e to come close to emulating a VT100.
CrossTalk on an MSDOS micro doesn't pass ALL of the 'vttest' tests, but it
works well enough. I have come across several PC compatibles -- notably the
early Quadram/Datavue -- that couldn't emulate a VT100 at speeds above 300
baud.

The Apple // doesn't have the line drawing chars or other special chars
that can fill in as VT100 special chars. I really need an emulator that makes
an approximation of the horizontal lines using the dash and the ANSI 'dot-in-
the-middle' character using the '.'.

Is the 6502 just too slow to keep up with all those escape sequences at
1200 baud?

comp.sys.apple always has posting/questions about VT100 emulation, but I've
never seen any objective evaluations of the available terminal emulators.
Could some of the people using Apple //s for serious VT100 text processing
share their experiences with us. I'm looking for product reviews that take
a serious look at the shortcomings of the software. If you use some package
that you feel has NO flaws, then be specific about the more strenuous
applications.

(Our specific need is for an emulator that works with CCI's OFFICE POWER
software. I work in an information center that is responsible for recommending
communictions programs for our users. So far, I've recommended that they
get an MSDOS computer or a Mac.)

On behalf of myself, the Resource Center, and our Apple owners, I thank you
for your suggestions & comments. I will be happy to summarize your exper-
iences in a later posting.

Sincerely,

Jay G. Heiser
