I have systematically toured a large number of record stores
in the Chicago area and my conclusions are as follows (in no
particular order):
Rose Records (214 S. Wabash)
Only decent selection of classical and ethnic imports that I have
found. Excellent rock, jazz, etc. selection also. Many of their
records are arranged by label and number, which is both a help
and hindrance. Claims to be the world's largest record store
and probably is.
Rose Records (other branches)
Small in comparison to the S. Wabash store. Selection ranges from
good to little more than "Top-40" depending on store.
Wax Trax
Probably the most bizarre selection of rock imports. Punk
specialists. Good used record department.
Rolling Stone (Norridge)
Probably the largest and one of the most complete for rock.
Rave-On (Wheaton) and Sound Warehouse (Downers Grove)
Best selections of rock imports I have found in the western
suburbs.
