[comp.sys.apple] Want ads.

dowst@VLSI.JPL.NASA.GOV.UUCP (10/25/87)

If anywone wants my opinion (and nobody probably does), want ads and
for sale ads ought not to be posted on the net. This is a function of
local BBSs and newsletters. Oh well, I am probably showing my age.

NO, Henry, you're not showing your age; but a little tolerance
goes a long way. Interested in seeing how tolerant AMERICANS
are? Take a peek at comp.society.futures - there's a battle
raging over Amnesty International; also look in news.groups
where A.I. bashing is becoming the norm.

Sheesh, I thought this was an *information* service - do we
really have net *censors* and net *gods* that say what can
and canNOT be said?

Take a trip around rec.humor - download a few epithets; hmmm,
epithets are allowed to be posted on USENET/UUCP, etc. but
Amnesty International and information about people being
abused/tortured/kidnapped/murdered is *not* allowed?

Please, give everyone a break; Poland is coming online -
the USSR will soon be online if it's not already; perhaps
if the net *gods* just ALLOW for Amnesty International then
governments might take *people* seriously and not treat
them like so much rubbish that can be discarded at the
whim of a challenged official.

Take yourSELF on over to news.groups and vote ** YES **
for Amnesty International or soc.human.rights so that
everyone is not offended that one group has a newsgroup
all its own like soc.culture.jewish, soc.culture.celtic,
soc.culture.indian.

Patt,

Henry P. Dowst writes, "... want ads and for sale ads ought not

You responded, in part, "Sheesh, I thought this was an
*information* service - do we really have net *censors* and net *gods*
that say what can and canNOT be said?"

I am compelled to point out that, as a distribution list,
Info-Apple originates on a Milnet (DoD side of Arpanet) host. The
Government's regulations are clear: only traffic that can be construed
as contributing to "official" government business is to be carried on
Milnet hosts. While we cannot control what people post to the USENET,
we must be aware:

		1. that want ads and other personal news have been
formally identified as not being of an "official" nature,

		2. that the "technical" traffic and the posting of
software ARE permitted and encouraged because of the large number of
Apple computers being used in government offices and labs,

		3. that the Milnet officials can, if they wish, shut
down the distribution of Info-Apple and, indeed, of USENET news to all
DoD computer sites, and

		4. that these reasons are why it is not allowed to route
mail from UUCP to Arpanet to UUCP.

Like it or not, this applies to Info-Apple, Info-CPM, and
others that originate on MILNET.

I hope you will understand that we are not being "bureaucratic"
when we remind users of these rules but are trying to protect and
preserve as much openness as we presently have by not challenging the
authorities to enforce the rules on us.
