I don't know usenet topology well enough to construct a reply address, and the way info-apple gets posted here the netheaders get lost. So if this does not automatically get gated to usenet could some kind soul find a way to get it to cbosgd!n8emr!lwv? Anyway, one quick suggestion: did you try fiddling with the monochrome/color configuration on the control panel? Haven't got my chips replaced yet, but I found that I had to have it in "monochrome" (even though I have the RGB monitor) to eliminate the funny smearing on the desktop program.
