[comp.sys.apple] "NEW" APDA Book

sector@pro-exchange.UUCP (Roby Sherman) (11/20/87)

As many of you may or may not know, APDA has a new book in beta draft form for
sale.. It's title is Programmer's Introduction to the Apple IIgs. I'm very
curious to know if anyone has seen it. If so, do you think it's worth buying
as a reference book?? Any comments/all comments will be greatly appreciated!

                                  Thanks in advance,
                                       Roby Sherman

I've seen it and it's quite good.

HOWEVER, I would not, no--NEVER-- pay money for a "beta draft" of anything.
Let those walking the thin line between being there and plain stupidity
pay for beta drafts. You can wait for the real thing, or check out
Gary Little's book "Exploring The Apple IIGS" or a new book from Compute!
called "Mastering The Apple IIGS Toolbox." Both would serve as a better
investment than paying money for something that's incomplete.

Though I would tend to agree that beta / draft documents are something that
the 'average' joe should steer away from, if that type of document is all that
one has access to, it is better than nothing. In fact, it may be better than
something. For instance, the current beta Apple Toolbox document are said
to be much better than an early available GS technical book from Osbourne Hill.
If a company keeps the beta/draft document up to date (which I do not know
for Apple/APDA) then it will more likely be better than published books, since
these books are frozen at least a month or more before first release.
As for Gary's book, though it is a supurb piece of writing, I BELIEVE that he
mentioned on Maug (tm) that he finished last looks at it in June. This
would mean that it is at least 5 months old. Apple should be keeping the
APDA distributed manuals relatively up to date, meaning that System Util
disk 3.1 would be documented on them. Since 3.1 was done in late August/ early
Sept range, Gary's book would not be able to address anything new which might
be on it. Same goes for the next disk, rumored to be available in early
88.
