[comp.sys.apple] Not vacationing and not resting

SEWALL@UCONNVM.BITNET.UUCP (11/23/87)

Your message posted to info-apple on 15 November arrived here on
bitnet today (23 Nov). I suspect that your attempt to send GET
commands to APPLE2-L were held up on the arpa side as well. From
the various mail I've received, there has been some "renovating"
on arpanet (or milnet or both) that has caused file backlogs at
various sites that are huge and may take weeks to work down to
"normal."

On our side, it appears that the loss of WISCVM's gateway between
bitnet and other nets will be solved by a set of regional gateways.
From here to there (bitnet --> arpa for instance) will be automatic
(or so we're promised) in that our MAIL systems will know where the
nearest gate is and use it. From you to bitnet is not nearly as
clear yet. As nearly as I understand it, mail going directly from
me to you will get the "From:" line recoded as it goes through the
gateway so that you'll know the most efficient return route. Mail
from me to brl.arpa will show the same gateway if the nearest gate
to me is the nearest route from any arpanet site, but other readers
of comp.sys.apple may not be able to figure out the nearest gate
by reading indirect mail (sent through the newslist). I expect
that if you send it to any gate to bitnet it'll get routed to me
okay, but only time will tell about that.

For some reason, as it is now our bitnet feed of comp.sys.apple
(aka info-apple) comes direct from brl.arpa to NDSUVM1 and again a
few days later from HUSC6 (that's at Harvard). The Harvard mailer
apparently has become the bane of electronic mail postmasters
everywhere -- I wouldn't be surprised to find it's the source of
some significant fraction of the arpa backlog. Maybe the new
internet regional gateways will solve the "multiple copies" problem
but I suspect it more likely that we'll start getting 3 or 4 of
everything instead of only 2.

NOTE FOR MIKE KAO - since none of us on bitnet have ever seen an
address to which we can "reply by email to insure receipt" you won't
need instructions on how to get files from APPLE2-L as the server is a
robot that's got even less of a chance at getting your correct address
than us humans do (I'd appreciate it if several dozen of you out
there in UUCP land would copy this paragraph and send it to Mike).
pnet01 (heck even crash) is a node unknown to the gateway from
bitnet to UUCP (indeed, I do know how to get mail to pnet01, but
the point is that the LISTSERV@BROWNVM doesn't).
