Transferring from a Mac (or anything else) to a mainframe depends substantially on what communication protocol(s) the mainframe will support. Mainframe communications protocols pre-date microcomputers. To make a long story short, mainframes generally talk in 7bits and micros want to speak in 8. If you're only interested in transferring text files AND your VAX has a 7-bit XMODEM capablility (some of the bitnet VAX's apparently have that, although I have no personal experience with a VAX), then virtually any Macintosh terminal program will do. If you want to be able to transfer ANY kind of file, there is a Macintosh Kermit program which has the added beauty of being public domain (your nearby Mac User Group should have a copy of Mac Kermit). The catch is your VAX has to have the Kermit program (its available for the Mac on tape). For information on how to get Kermit for the VAX, Mac, IBM-PC's, Apple II's, Atari's, Amiga's, Sun's, and what have you.
