[comp.sys.apple] BITNET/ARPANET Gateways

SEWALL@UCONNVM.BITNET (12/05/87)

I got the following information from Chris Chung (who maintains APPLE2-L).
NOTE, the CUNYVM.CUNY.EDU gatework is working now and you should begin
using it so that mail doesn't bounce when WISCVM shuts down in 10 days.
UCONNVM is not nearly so progressive as to be contemplating its own
gateway, but we're only two nodes from CUNYVM anyway. I hope when
BROWNVM has it's own gateway, APPLE2-L will become reachable by everyone
(dare I hope that BROWN.EDU will become the "home" of comp.binaries.apple??)

>For ARPANET users sending to BITNET a change may be required. ARPANET users
>who reply to mail from BITNET will use the new address, since one function
>of the gateway is to change the "From" field of the mail header to an
>address to which an Arpanet user can reply. However, for now, ARPANET
>users originating mail will have to substitute CUNYVM where they had
>been using WISCVM. For mail to Brown, CUNYVM will be replaced by another
>gateway, probably at MIT, as soon as a better replacement is ready.
>Finally, Brown is in the process of establishing its own Arpanet
>connection. When that is fully operational, an Arpanet user will be able to
>send mail directly to Brown, using an addess such as "user@BROWNVM.BROWN.EDU",
>without having to specifying a BITNET gateway.
