[comp.sys.apple] Copy ][ Plus Version 8

bhoar@pro-novapple.UUCP (Brendan Hoar) (12/01/87)

I just read an advertisement in A+ magazine which announced Copy 2 + version 8

Central Point mentions a 3.5 BIT COPIER. Anyone have any information on this?

If it is a REAL bit-copier, it'd be a first...

Beta test versions of Copy II+ Version 8.0 have been out in Portland for
the last month and Tim Schallberger from Central Point Software was
scheduled to talk about it at the 17-Nov-87 meeting of Apple*Van
(Vancouver, WA Apple user's group). Unfortunately Tim was too busy to
keep the commitment (registered users HAVE received the usual 'update'
postcard and I hear that Central Point was 'going to press' with the new
program last Friday). Several of the beta testers filled in for Tim and
showed off the new program.

Larrie Easterly (a IIgs owner) says the 3.5 utilities are wonderful.
There is a completely new 3.5 bit copy section that takes full advantage
of all available RAM. The beta test documentation says that the 3.5
utilities "should support extra memory in the IIGS, Laser 128EX, Apple-
style 1 meg RAM boards and Applied Engineering RamWorks "ProDrive"
RAMdisk, to reduce the number of disk swaps".

The 5.25 section has not been changed much. The 5.25 utilities do take
advantage of extra RAM but the 5.25 bit copy does not. Like many
IIgs owners, Larrie has only one 5.25 drive and he found that bit
copy of 5.25 disks required an incredible number of disk swaps.
Larrie loaned me his disks last night but I haven't had a chance to
try it yet (I have an unenhanced Apple //e, somewhat flakey DuoDisk,
old UDC & old (no indicator light) Central Point 3.5 drive.

I have heard some rumors about the Central Point UDC and Chinon 3.5"
drive not working correctly in the Apple IIgs but I'd like to verify
that with Central Point.

I haven't, but then I never got a postcard from Apple about the IIGS
ROM upgrade either. If CP or Apple are listening, please send me my
postcards.

I too never received an upgrade notice, or any mail for that matter, from
Central Point, although I purchased Copy II Plus 6.6 and sent in the card.
Perhaps I shouldn't complain. I've never received update notices from
Apple Computer, Inc., Applied Engoneering, Sensible Software, Softronics,
etc. Makes the "registered owner" status a little less valuable.

Generally, I find out about updates from this BB, from _A+_ or Call A.P.P.L.E.,
from newsletters like Open-Apple or AppleWorks Journal, or from articles in
the _Computer Shopper_. In my experience, the software publishers and hardware
manufacturers have lost all interest once a sale was made.
