I first noticed the following problem before I up-graded my GS but on reveiw I find it still persists. What I have noticed is that after booting and with the finder screen on the monitor the boot drive 3.5 in slot 5 drive 1 makes a faint clicking sound which disappears when you press the mouse button. I have tried this with 1 and 2 3.5 attached and with a disk II daisy chained. I have a Imagewriter attached to the printer port and a smartmodem clone attached to the modem port. One other thing the noise is some what louder when diversi-cache is added. What I would like is a respose from anyone who can find the same problem to help me when in a discussion with APPLE Canada who claim they can't duplicate this situation but would like to know more. I'm worried that finder is leaving the disk active and might distroy data like several versions of prodos I can recall. Thanks in advance Grant Delaney Ps If you interested I post a summary of the replys

In regards to the problem of the clicking 3.5" drive on the IIGS. I have a new IIgs with the same problem. I have a 3.5" drive connected to the smart port and a 5.25" drive daisy chained to the 3.5". An Image Writer II in port 1 and a Hayes 2400 smart modem in port 2. The clicking i hear comes from the 5.25" drive while I am in the finder; the frequency of this occurence is about 2 or 3 times a second. The frequency is much greater during disc swaps using fast copy. I also hear strange noises while opening a file in a session with MULTISCRIBE GS. I am interested in communicating with anyone concerning this (including APPLE) and am also interested in the responses to the original message. Excuse me if I mess anything up , I am very inexperienced with this NETWORK-- My home phone is (303) 499-0314 and work is (303) 497-1344.

Finder, in it's spare time, repeatedly checks all of the 3.5" drives connected to the GS. It does this to keep track of disk switches. I've never noticed anything with the AppleDisk 3.5 drives, but with the Unidisk 3.5 drives you can see the drive light flicker about once a second. Since Finder is only doing status calls to the device, there is no danger of destroying data. -Paul R. Wenker -MECC

I don't know if this would work on a ][gs, but on ][e and ][c, at least, Prosel's Scavenger program checks all drives (including RAM), notes those that contain volumes, and eliminates future access to unmounted drives. By running Scavenger again, all bets are off. ****DISCLAMER: My comments, etc., are my own shakey opinions ******** | Bruce P.
