[comp.sys.apple] AppleTalk Card...

cayz@UDEL.EDU (James Cayz) (12/18/87)

All,

I am the unofficial Apple (& all other computers) expert on my floor,
and I have a user that wishes to hook up his Apple II (e, plus???) to our
AppleTalk network, and use some software to access our LaserWriter...

I talked to a salesperson at our local authorized Apple II dealer (no
names mentioned), and he said that such a beast did not exist. Now, I know
that there is an ApplePC card, so I would IMAGINE that there wuld be an AppleII
card, right??? Or am I wrong?

If there is such as beast, I need the standard info: cost (approx), who
makes it, and what special software / hardware is needed to access networked
LaserWriters???

Any and all pointers and suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

						Thanx,
						James

If all you need is terminal emulation, with no special need for TIC itself,
ProTERM would be a good ichoice. It's got all of TICs features, plus
a LOT more. I'm not sure if you've heard about it, so I won't ramble about
the millions of thiings it does or how easy it is to use. If you would
like some info, leave me mail, and I'll send some to you back thru
E-mail.

Your dealer is quite right. Apple, in it's effort to make sure us ][ users
don't encrouch on the business world, didn't want to give us AppleTalk in
the first place (on the GS), but finally did. They didn't want us using the
laserwriter, but people like Don Lancaster did anyway. In anycase, the last
I heard, there is supposed to be an AppleTalk card out for the ][ soon, mid
'88, around $300 (DON'T QUOTE ME! I got it as rumour and I pass it on as
such!)

I'm not anybody, and I say what I feel like saying. SO the responsibility
is mine.
