In truth, the ProDOS operating system has numerous significant advantages over DOS 3.3 (which is a marvel though if for no other reason than the Woz is said to have written most of it <the original Apple DOS> in an afternoon). Problem: there's still a good deal of really nice DOS 3.3 software that's never been ported to ProDOS (and won't be in the case of stuff from companies that have gone Chapter 11 or otherwise vanished). As I've mentioned before, I know a HUGE number of people who still use Hayden's PIE Writer because it's files are mainframe compatible (and to boot, it's very nearly a clone of IBM mainframe SCRIPT) and it's a nice simple (quick -- all in RAM) general purpose editor (in 'T' or 'B' format). It would be nicer (and less memory bound) in ProDOS, but alas Hayden (and Spinnaker, which bought Hayden out) can't be interested (or even bribed) to port PIE to ProDOS. Have you ever tried Volkfiler (available for about $12 from A.P.P.L.E.)? That's one of the all time best values for the $$$ I've ever bought (won't run in ProDOS 8-( ). I'm still willing to allocate 400K of my RamFactor for a DOS 3.3 partition (and in terms of use hours, I still use DOS 3.3 more than ProDOS). Seems to me I saw a program that's supposed to permit a DOS 3.3 volume to exist as a "file" on a ProDOS volume (and modify DOS 3.3 to recognize it) on a local BBS (I'll check into that) -- ain't it amazin' what ol' Uncle DOS can be modified to do? Not too shabby for an obsolescent ol' slug. --------------------- ARPA: sewall%uconnvm.bitnet@cunyvm.cuny.edu Murphy A. Sewall BITNET: SEWALL@UCONNVM School of Business Admin.
