[comp.sys.apple] Public domain software for Apple IIe

SEWALL@UCONNVM.BITNET (01/06/88)

Software written for the Macintosh or specifically for the Apple IIgs
won't run on the //e, but virtually everything else for the Apple on
5.25 inch disks (there is some 3.5 inch stuff too, but Macs don't use
the 5.25 format) will run on a //e (anything for the ][+, //e, or //c).

If you have an older //e (also known as "unenhanced") some software
for the //e either won't run or displays peculiar looking inverse video
(you can "enhance" a //e for about $75 the last time I paid any attention;
I have not enhanced my //e's and have suffered no real ill effects --
almost all the stuff that really needs the enhancement kit is commercial
<not public domain>).

There is Apple public domain available on bitnet (you can subscribe to
APPLE2-L at LISTSERV@BROWNVM.bitnet -- write CC004019@BROWNVM.BITNET if
you need help). As for public domain software generally; it is available
in such large quantities as to be difficult to deal with without help.
Your best bet is to ask around your campus for information about a local
Apple User group (they can supply you with LOTS of help, answer questions,
and provide more public domain software than you are likely going to want
to buy diskettes for).

Part of the enhancement kit replaces the ][e 6502 processor with a 65C02.
This part of an enhanced ][e come along "free" with a Applied Engineering
Transwarp accelerator board. The software may still look somewhat funny
(no mousetext), but most things will now run. There are, however, some
new commands in the enhanced ROMS (I believe) that will be lacking.

Bruce,
Thanks for the response. It certainly has been helpful
along with the others who have replied as well.
