[comp.sys.apple] 16-bit AppleWorks

>I don't have it in front of me, but the current Open Apple (came in our
>mail, perhaps by dog-sled, yesterday) has a letter (?Randy Brandt) stating
>that AppleWorks 2.0 is already 16 bit. Specificall, the SEG.XXX file used
>by the ][gs is 16 bit. The letter also indicated which SEG.XXX was used
>for what purpose, allowing one to delete (from a copy, of course) those
>that are not needed on a particular system disk.

I saw that too, BUT only part of the program (the I/O interface) is in
16 bit code (that's not too helpful). A full 16-bit implementation
would lead to MUCH improved spreadsheet recalcs, data base sorts, and
word processor replacing (Weishaar's editorial comments after Brandt's
letter also are worth the reading).

I followed Randy Brandt's information, and removed SEG.RM and SEG.XM from an
AppleWorks 2.0 System disk designed to use on a ][e with RamWorks III. There
seemed to be no ill effects. AppleWorks, including all the TimeOut
enhancements I have so far (Filemaster and Graph haven't come yet), continue
to work just fine.
