You mentioned exactly what I was talking about.. While the VT-52 uses a binary
code for screen coordinates the VT-100 uses ASCII codes for digits right? 
That's the main reason you usually can't drive a VT-100 off the same table
used for binary coded terminals like the VT-52, IBM 3101, etc etc etc.  This
certainly doesn't mean that VT-100 is impossible but it's more complex than
coding to emulate terminals such as the VT-52 et al.  I assume that the VT-100
works the way it does so it will work better on 7-bit systems since it could
potentially generate an 8-bit screen coordinate at least in its wide screen
mode.
