I have been having a lot of problems with the finder on the System Disk 3.1 lately. I just downloaded a lot of desk accessories from CompuServe yesterday, and I wanted to install them. So I copied them over to the System Disk, into the DeskAccs folder, booted it up, and it crashed into the monitor. I tried putting the Desk Accessories on other disks, and they wouldn't boot either. I don't know what the problem is, but it's getting pretty annoying. I'd like to be able to use the Finder, but I really don't see any point besides the Desk Accessories and Fonts. The IIGS has no memory protection, so a buggy program can crash the whole system. (Most home computers share this problem.)

For my purposes I have relegated the Finder to nothing more than hard disk maintenance functions, and then only under limited circumstances. Note that I run under the APW shell. My observation is that numerous GS users are enthralled with the Finder, just as I was initially, because of the nice pictures, pull down menus, and mouse interface. Then I realized how much it was slowing me down. An interesting tangential issue I have been wrestling with: I am working on an application of fairly significant magnitude and am now reassessing my earlier decision to use the desk top environment over the text screen mode. Does a mouse on a desktop REALLY lead to improved productivity? My current feeling is that desktops are great for novices and the occassional user, but so-called power users probably achieve more without the mouse and desktop "niceties". Comments invited (flames accepted, but really now...) Bud

To the person having trouble with the DA s on the FINDER __ I think your problem might be with one or two particular DAs that you downloaded. I have version 3.1 and have installed a bunch of DA's with only a few slight problems. One or two of them occasionally crash, but not on bootup but on use. If I were you (and you may have allready done this) I would put them in and boot them up one at a time to isolate the culprit(s). Good luck DAN
