[comp.sys.apple] infected programs

Given the rash of infected IBM-PC public domain and shareware programs
lately, can someone tell us what kind of assurance there is that
programs contributed to, and downloaded from Apple-2L and Compuserve
etc.  do not contain viruses?  I'm nervous enough about using such
widely a tested program as Kermit, much more so some rag-tag collection
of desk accessories.
