Kermit is now up to 3.79 (which isn't much different from 3.76 or 3.78 except it fixes some bugs in the vt-100 emulation). The VT-100 is far from complete. It's ok for using on an IBM-CMS system (mainly to get on and transfer files), but I suspect trying to use it with as a general purpose vt-100 is likely to reveal its limitations. SOFTERM 2 does a terrific VT-100, but it's EXPENSIVE (list is $195, but I've seen mail order ads for $135 or so). The nice thing about SOFTERM (in addtion to handling VT-100 and 20some other terminal including 3101 block mode) is that it supports II+, //e, //c (gs internal port in beta test), and practically every Apple 80 column card and serial board ever made up to 9600 baud. SOFTERM supports standard XModem (without CRC) and it's own propritary transfer protocol (for which they distribute a VAX version I believe) with some software for some mainframes. --------------------- ARPA: sewall%uconnvm.bitnet@wiscvm.wisc.edu Murphy A. If 3.79 vt100 mode doesnt work correctly on these full screen editors i would like to know about it. As far as i can tell it bats 100% on unix & vms. It is not complete just whats necessary and it is slow. 4800 baud is about as fast as it will go and unless you have an //e+ or gs (i think) you will need flow control or slower baud. Ted

With all the talk about VT100 emulators and programs think of what you will be doing. If you are talking to a MAIN Frame at your university or elswhere and using editors or it's operating system "think" do you need all the features of one of the many communications programs. I'm using KERMIT381 on my GS and on //e's at work where others use Softerm regularly and find the keyboard lay out for the keypad in kermit much more convenient. One other thing on the GS Ted Medin has Kermit recognizing the GS keypad as if it were a VT100 so you don't even use the OA keys on a GS. I have yet to find a commercial program that can do that. Kermit may not have all the bells and Whistles but few programs can handle the whole line II to IIgs and be so widly supported. Even on of the major hlod outs COMPUSERVE now supports Kermit file transfer.

I too can not see what the big deal is over VT-100 emulation. I use Proterm which has quite a few emulations and I have no problem with any of them. In fact the lastest release has a Proterm Special emulation that has mousetext and music capabilities. The terminals it will emulate are (as of release 1.9s): Datamedia 1500 Proterm Special Heathkit H-19 Televideo Hazeltine 1500 Soroc IQ 120 LSI ADM-3A IBM 3101 DEC VT-52 DEC VT-100 Not a bad selection. Even without the emulations I believe Proterm is the Best terminals program for the Apple ][ series by quite a ways and if you need emulations of any of the above that just make it that much nicer.
