How old is your //c? Your problem sounds like the infamous //c crystal problem (the story is so often told thaat it's nearly achieved the status of lore). The short version is that your modem probably is NOT the source of the problem (and the techs at PinPoint should know that full well even if they have been reduced to having the phone answered by kids who were in middle school when the //c was first marketed). You may need a motherboard swap -- Computer Resources near Hartford routinely does the swap for free when this problem occurs; I suspect (hope) an Apple dealer near you will do likewise (call for an appointment, the swap takes roughly half an hour if the store tech is there, has the part, and is expecting you). Updated //c ROM is a fringe benefit. --------------------- ARPA: sewall%uconnvm.bitnet@cunyvm.cuny.edu Murphy A. Sewall BITNET: SEWALL@UCONNVM School of Business Admin. I had the infamous //c-won't-work-with-my-modem problem. Apple will install a new motherboard free of charge (done at your local dealer) providing you show proof of purchase of a serial device, more than likely a modem. I am happy to say that I had the upgrade completed less than 24 hours after I found out the problem by trial and error. Never having heard of the bug (yes, I know) I had tried everything. I then remembered the modem worked at the dealer on a //c in the showroom. Bingo. Any //c owners should encounter no problem getting the upgrade.
