[comp.sys.apple] "Print Screen" function on Apple IIe?

stiles@druhi.ATT.COM (K. L. Stiles) (11/23/87)

Does anyone know a "trick" or any way to print (on ImageWriter)
whatever is on the screen of an Apple IIe? A friend of mine has
an Apple and relies on me for "technical advice", so I'd
appreciate any advice you Apple II experts could pass along.

And for that matter does anyone know how to do a print screen on an apple
//gs to an imagewriter? Sure would be a nice tool.

One of the problems with trying to do this is that the page two switch
also flips memory banks. I'll see if I can crank out a simple program
to do this, or dig it out of an old Open-Apple - - I remember they had
something about it.

P.S. ever wonder why I never capitalize my last name? I try to, but I
never get my pinky on the shift key in time. . .Besides, it's my login.

IMAGE PRINTER ][, a DOS3.3 printing and modest graphics program published
by Sensible Software in 1982 (may no longer be disd) can capture a
picture in HIRES page 1. It can then be manipulated, save, printed. Of
course, the DOS3.3 aspect is not too great, nor is the absence of double
hi-res.

The only way I know of to do quick and immediate screen dumps is by the
use of a card called "The Fingerprint +". This card is a serial and
parallel printer card (at the same time!) although only one type of
cable comes with the card when you buy it. It is manufactured by
Thirdware Products Inc. based out of Florida and costs about $75
depending on who you buy it from. There have been numerous
reviews of this card in magazines such as Computist.

The card does more than just do screen dump, but it does those extreamly
well! It operates by the pressing of a small, user placeable switch
pad. This causes the card to send an NMI to the CPU and the card takes
over totally. A menu pops up giving you your choices. My favorites are
paging through the video memory and picking out what I want to print,
rotating the picture 90 degrees, and enlarging it. For those of us
lucky enough to have a color printer, there is an option for color
screen dumps as well. The inverse video option sometimes makes the
color picture turn out much better than the straight screen dump. You
may also save the screen to a disk for later printing/editing if so
desired. The card also has a typewriter function that allows you to
type directly to the printer, maybe to give a title for the screen dump?
The picture produced is about 40x30 characters with the enlarged picture
being about 90x70 (i.e. you have to rotate it to fit it on a normal
8.5"x11" piece of paper). You may also have the picture tabed to a
specific part of the paper if more than one picture per page is desired,
or maybe for a report or something!

All I can say is that I have enjoyed using mine for about 1.5 years now,
and it's been worth every penny. I use both ports for screen dumps and
have not had a moments trouble doing it. There is even a money back
guarantee for the more cautious ones.
