[comp.sys.apple] Deprotecting IIgs Programs

REWING@TRINCC.BITNET (01/22/88)

In response to Bruce Halpern's problems with his Unidisk 3.5 and Copy ][ v8.1:

It sounds to me that if you want to be able to use this drive for bitcopy
purposes, (I'm assuming you have a IIgs) you will have to perform the famed
(and a little dangerous) Unidisk lobotomy. Remember that every unidisk 3.5
comes with a smartport(?) board inside to handle requests for read/write
(ala Commodore 64's 1521). If you open the drive, and disconnect the
cable going into the board and reconnect it directly into the drive itself,
then the drive will function as though it were a stock (dumb) Appledisk 3.5.

Note that this process is better explained elsewhere, and it does void any
warrenties that still might be on the drive. Doing this process *should*
work, but of course, my opinions are only theories based on previously
discussed fact. Assuming the process does work, then not only will Copy
][ Plus v8.1 work in the bit copy mode, but you should also notice a slight
speed inprovement. Good luck.
