PatchMania is a ProDOS disk sold by Jem Software for $20. It contains a number of patches for AppleWorks. Many of these patches have been published. One of the theoretical attractions about PatchMania is that it will, under menu control, install or remove the patches. Unfortunately, it isn't always so. The 'Dont stop to ask for the date' patch doesn't seem to come off once its on. In addition, this patch PRODUCES AN UNBOOTABLE APPLEWORKS 2.0 IF APPLIED TO A 3.5 IN DISK USED ON A ][c WITH AN EXTERNAL Applied Engineering System Clock. Similar irreversable loss if disk is used on a ][e without any system clock, but with clock time placed into ProDOS. Quite possibly, the patch would work fine with an internal system clock. However, it would be nice to be warned. Another problem is the 'Don't ask me to put in the Program Disk' patch. This is incompatible with AppleWorks 2.0 modified with A.E.'s desktop expander (for RamWorks) and Timeout. Such a disk, if patched, no longer boots. ****DISCLAMER: My comments, etc., are my own shakey opinions ******** | Bruce P.
