[comp.sys.apple] IIGS Modem Cable

mdavis@pro-sol.cts.COM (Morgan Davis) (01/28/88)

Apple sells a botched cable, labeled as "Modem Cable" for the IIGS. It
doesn't correctly wire the DCD line to the port as the extended firmware calls
want. So, the correct wiring is shown in this diagram.

Subject: Re: GS Modem Cable

The pin-out that I use is as follows:

    DB-25                              MINI DIN 8
     2  <------------------------------<  3  TX-
     3  >------------------------------>  5  RX-
     6  >------------------------------>  2  DSR (handshake in)
   20   <------------------------------<  1  DTR (handshake out)
     8  >------------------------------>  7  DCD
     7  -------------------------------   4  SIG GND
                                  |
                                  ----->  8  RX+
                                    Ground RX+ to prevent noise pick-up
                                    RX+ is not needed for RS-232
                                    6 TX+ no connect

                                        |_|
                                      6  7  8
                                     3   4   5
                                       1   2

If you use this *correct* cable, be sure to go into the Control Panel and
change these to settings for the Modem Port:

        DCD Handshake: No
        DSR/DTR Handshake: No

This correct cable works fine with MouseTalk, Talk is Cheap, ProTERM, Z-Link,
and ModemWorks. It probably works fine on every program that uses the Modem
Port on the IIGS, but those are the ones I've tested.
