[net.movies] Saavik and the Katra Ritual

okie@ihuxs.UUCP (B.K. Cobb) (06/08/84)

Considering the fact that Saavik *is* half-Romulan,
perhaps we should all be willing to give her a break
about being Vulcan. After all, it probably took her
quite a while to even come under Spock's guidance,
considering her wild upbringing (for reference, read
the novelization of ST:TWOK). It's likely that she
might not have understood the *katra* ritual fully,
or that Spock may not have reached the point of
explaining it fully (I know, this makes Spock a bit
fallible, but...).

However, if she had known about it, it would make
for an interesting subplot. Just imagine Saavik
holding Spock's *katra*, and then Spock suddenly
undergoing *pon far*...(no, of course I'm not
serious!)

While we're on the subject of the *katra*, anyone
want to undertake the explanation of the Vulcan culture
to include their logic, their mystic origins, and their
family structure--say, in a three-volume set?
