[comp.sys.apple] Recovering from a RESET in APPLEWORKS

gordon@alberta.UUCP (Gordon Atwood) (01/25/88)

Would anyone know how to recover from a system reset while running APPLEWORKS?
Specifically for Version 1.2, but any and all version might be helpful.

There is a simple solution to recovering from a RESET from Appleworks.
Install *Super*MarcoWorks onto Appleworks 2.0 or later and hitting
reset will bring you back to the main menu.
Note that I have found that this works about 98% of the time.
But it has saved some lives(read mine)!

All Beagle Bros. TIMEOUT series enhancements for Appleworks
(Ultramacros, Quickspell, etc.) automatically patch AppleWorks
2.0 so that Control-Reset returns you (most of the time) to
the main AppleWorks menu.

When using Super Macroworks (NOT the timeout version), about 10% of
the time, reset will not bring you back tot he menu, but land you in
the monitor. If this happens, try: typing '31BG' and hit return. If
that doesnt work, the system has taken some major clobbering, and you
probably won't get back in. (There is a long, and excruciating way of
digging your way back in.. see back issues of _Open Apple_ for it)

No matter which way you get in after a Reset, appleworks should be treated
as 'untrustworthy' and you should save your files and reboot, ASAP.

There's a program called RESET.SYSTEM that installs as a "pre-boot" to
AppleWorks, and reconnects the reset vector (that Apple so thoughtfully left
unconnected...). It's available on all major networks (GEnie, BIX, Source,
etc.), or can be downloaded from the Data Library on ProLine [sol] at (619)
281-7222 (login: guest).

Be aware that a minimum of 1200 bps is required for accessing the Library.
The system itself will take 300 bps, though.
