One thing that I keep seeing more and more is the fact that MORE and MORE people/organizations/schools/laboratories that are using Apple ][ family computers of all types are literally SCREAMING for a network system. I know that Corvus has one, and I have been able to see it in a small operational status, but I just can't figure out why Apple seemingly refuses to support the various folks around the world that have been purchasing the Apple ][ which was their founding money-maker! AppleTalk is what I am talking about, and just the fact that AppleTalk exists for the IBM now really pisses me off. There are hundreds of applications where AppleTalk would help the Apple ][ user that wishes to network! Yet, we, again, seem to play last place to even IBM on Apple Co.'s list of priorities. One thing I did notice is that in the last issue of one of the Apple mags (I can't remember which one and if I get flamed I guess I shall have to resort to pulling all of them out of the stack in the corner and reading till I can find it!!!) there was a short blurp about the possibility of AppleTalk coming out for that Apple ][ family, with thehe only small discrepancy of the network needing to buy a complete MACINTOSH ][ SYSTEM!!!! 8-( 8-( to run the damn thing! That, even over the IBM AppleTalk release, really perturbs me. I can see the situation now as I walk into my Apple dealer: Me: "Excuse me, I need to get an AppleTalk system for my //gs and //e at at home. Can you help me out? Dealer: "Sure, um... lesse'. Sure, that's the ticket! You buy this ten thousand dollar system and it will be able to network the two computers that you only invested five thousand dollars in over the the past six years! Yeah, and I'll even give you a two point discount on the AppleTalk cards! Yeah, that's the ticket! Slobber, Grovel. (As I fork over a measley ten grand). So, I'd expect that one way or another things are not going to turn out well for the Apple ][ owner. Personally, sometimes I would love to take that Mac ][ and !!!!!! <well, you know>. If this IS true, it seems that the ghost of Steve Jobs is still around somewhere at Apple! (and also working with good ole' Jack T. to make that Atari/NeXt Macintosh clone, I might add :-) ). +------------------------------------------------------------------+ | uucp: crash!pnet01!pro-simasd!pro-pac!tsouth | Now I only get 50 | | Todd South : Ewa Beach, HI. | cents less than | | Pacific Proline: (808) 499-2831 2400 bd. | minimum wage... | +------------------------------------------------------------------+

Would it be possible for some public minded group to develop the hardware and sortware for Appletalk compatibility for II's on their own and publish all the details neccesary for other people to make their own networks? In other words, if Apple won't give us appletalk, can we make it ourselves? -- Doug Reeder USENET: ...!tektronix!reed!douglas Box 502 Reed College 122 38' W 45 28' N 3203 S.E.
