The protocol that all the 9600 boards use in the list I posted is that used
on the US Robotics 9600 HST.  This is the modem with the highest home
computer use.  The reason is that they originally were selling for $1000.
If you were a sysop of a BBS, you could get one for $500.  Needless to say,
a lot of phony boards went up.  After the verifying call from USR, the phony
board was taken down and they got their modem for half price.  Anyway, that
is what to use.  If you have one, start calling.  The oldest boards on this
list are excellent.  Some have been up for a few years, but the list is only
about a year old.
