[comp.sys.apple] Unpacking Binary II libraries on II+?

ganzer@trout.NOSC.MIL (Mark T. Ganzer) (02/27/88)

Is there ANY way to unpack Binary II libraries on a II+? It seems like
every program in APPLE2-L that I'm interested in is packed in this format
and BLU doesn't run on a II+. I've seen reference to a program called ALU.
Will this run on a II+ , and if so, where can I get a copy of it?

To unpack Binary II programs that aren't squeezed on a ][+ you can use Binary
Up and Binary Down. These are simple 8-block programs that just pack and
unpack Binary II files. However, if you get a Binary II file that is
squeezed (it will usually be called xxxx.BQY), you have to use BLU to unpack
it, and unfortunately there is no way to use BLU or any other compatible
program on a ][+. I know some people who tried ALU, which is another library
utility that can handle Binary II files, but it won't unsqueeze files packed
with BLU......

I think you need a //e..

ALU will also unpack Binary II files, though I dont know whether it will
run on an Apple II or not. There is also a pair of programs called BI2DWN
and BI2UP (I believe) which are used to create uploading and downloading versions
of Binary II files. Didnt I just see this one published in A+ or CALL Apple
in the last 2 months? It is also available on Compuserve and probably the other
networks; not having access to Apple2-L I do not know if it is there or not.

Enhanced //e, if I remember correctly. If not, then somebody please inform
me, for I am about to enhance my //e for this purpose.

Thanks to everyone who sent copies of the Binary II up and down programs
(it was also mentioned that the programs were in the March issue of
Nibble).

As for the squeezed Binary II files (xxxx.BQY), I came across one and was
able to unpack it first by running USQ2 (APPLE2-L 87-000522 on the brownvm
listserver), then running binary.dwn. Not quite as neat as BLU would be,
but that's what I get for not moving up to a more modern Apple II variant.:-(
