[comp.sys.apple] SCSI / ProDOS Question

Bruce_Kahn@maytag.ceo.dg.COM (03/01/88)

I have been reading a lot about SCSI drives of various sorts and
have heard that up to 8 drives can be put on 1 controller. I would
like to know how, under ProDOS, I would be able to access each drive
if, for instance, they were all 40Megs. Since each drive would be
partitioned into 2 20Megs or 1 32Megs (w 8 for 3.3?), how would the
drives be addressable? Since ProDOS only supplys links for 2 drives
per slot (in the Device Table), would you use some arcane maping
scheme? Bruce

Yes, SCSI will support up to 8 devices (or is it 7) chained together.

However, as you pointed out, Prodos can not yet handle that many devices
if you have to partition each hard disk into multiple volumes. The fault
lies in Prodos, not in SCSI. Likewise is the case for the magical
transfer rate of hard disks. The Apple's bus is the limiter there.

Look for the full 16-bit implementation of Prodos 16 (2.0) to eliminate
the problems on limitations on devices per slot. Also look for it to
extend the limit on maximum volume sizes and file sizes.
