[comp.sys.apple] comp.sys.binaries

SEWALL@UCONNVM.BITNET (03/05/88)

I can't speak for ALL of the bitnet subscribers, but I have seen
no hint animosity nor any other form of negative intent vis a vie
an apple.binaries. Apathy means non-votes NOT no votes.

APPLE2-L exists NOT as an alternative to an apple.binaries. The
original idea was something is better than nothing, and the hope was
that APPLE2-L and comp.apple.binaries would exist in parallel (bitnet
does NOT have access to ftp so there is no single solution that could
work for everyone). Getting APPLE2-L started was MUCH less complicated
than adding another list to newsgroups.

One problem - it isn't easy for bitnet users to get mail through
to many USENET addresses (including Larry Virden's). It can be
done, but it isn't straight-forward. I'm rather pleased with myself
for having mastered enough of the arcane trivia about gateways (such
as learning how to "fool" my upper case oriented mailer into sending
lower case addresses when it's necessary) to get mail through most
of the time. Old timers (if you've subscribed to info-apple for more
than a year) will recall that I used to express more than a little
discontent about the frequency with which I heard from mailer deamons.

I suspect that if a vote were taken on a readily accessible address
(someone on arpanet proper?) the 78 bitnet subscribers to info-apple
would be happy to stuff the "ballot box" with yes votes. I'm not
too sure how impressed the powers that be on USENET would react to
that. We bitnet subscribers haven't access to the procedures
required to get another vote taken, but we do offer whatever moral
support that we can.

I agree that someone with a central address might get a better vote - though
I still doubt that enough people would vote to get it passed.

May I make a suggestion - someone with either portal or uunet would be a great
idea, since uunet is a MAJOR backbone and portal supposedly can talk arpa and
uucp...
