[comp.sys.apple] Publish It!

STEIN@UCONNVM.BITNET (03/08/88)

I tried checking out Publish It!, which surprisingly did not seem too bad
until I tried putting a fairly substantial article into a newsletter and got
a message that it couldn't all be loaded. It seems like it only uses 35K
ram for its documents. Am I missing something?

I had some difficulty trying to send this directly to Joe Beland, so I'm
posting it on Info-Apple.
I used Publish It! on a IIGS to check it out. I found it a bit slow, but
not too bad for some tasks. I tried importing some files from Appleworks to
put together a short newsletter. The importing wasn't bad, although it is
somewhat unfriendly. You have to name the directory before you select
import and you also have to have the program disk in at all times -- a real
pain.
The documentation says that the main program file -- dtp.main -- should be
copied
onto every disk, but that didn't work. I have one 3 1/2" drive to go with
two 5 1/4" drives. I also had my Appleworks files on a 3 1/2" drive. In
order to import those files, I had the choice of copying them onto the
Publish It! program disk in advance, or else copying Publish It! to my
ram disk in advance and running from ram.
Also, the program seems to use only 30K for its newsletter, which meant
that a two page newsletter pushed it to capacity.
Perhaps they have some way of getting around the 30K business that I missed,
but if not, it's a real limitation.
I also tried running it with the GS at its slow speed to see how it would be
on a IIe. It got annoyingly slow.
The output was surprisingly good. Hopefully, they'll speed it up a little
bit. It seems like an option for infrequent use, but I wouldn't want to put
out newsletters with it on a regular basis.
