I remember back when the IIgs was introduced in the September of 1986, and there was a conference to talk about it on Compu$erve with the IIgs' main designers. I asked that specific question about the IIgs' future and whether or not the 65832 was a part of it. The answer that I got back was that the 65832 was "a figment of Bill Mensch's [65816 designer] imagination", and that Apple really didn't think that a product was currently being developed, or even feasible by Western Digital. They said that they'd love such a chip, but they're not getting their hopes up. Oh well, I suppose we can always dream. And Western Digital has had some more time on the problem, and at least seems to be seeding Apple with some faster 65816s. Whether or not they'll be used anytime soon, is anyone's guess. The latest Apple II Tech Notes files from Applelink seemed to discount the GS+ logic board upgrades rumour considering that the VGC and ROMs were just recently upgraded; in other words, if Apple was preparing for a logic board upgrade, they would have done everything all at once. --Rick Ewing Trinity College REWING@TRINCC.Bitnet

The 65XXX family was produced by Western Design Centre (WDC), not Western Digital Corporation (WDC).
