[comp.sys.apple] //e enhancement

heacock@UKANVAX.BITNET (03/04/88)

I have an older, unenhanced //e, and I'm having a lot of trouble
getting anything I have downloaded from APPLE2-L to work. It's
possible I'm doing something stupid (or failing to do something
obvious), but I am inclined to think it is simply that I need to
upgrade my machine. My dealer says this costs $60 (if I do the work),
and I have to trade in my old ROMs. Is this reasonable? Are the new
ROMs all that different? Could this be my problem in the first place?

I will appreciate any information or suggestions that might help.
Thanks in advance.

Do you mean that when you try to BRUN the execed file that it often times loads into the machine and then drops you into monitor mode or freezes up? I have alotof trouble with those kind of things happening with software I get from APPL2-L
too. What the problem usually is (90% of the time) is that the new file created
when you execed the executioner text was either saved as a BIN file when it
should have be a SYS or else its the other way around (should be a SYS but was
saved as a BIN). I don't know why this happens but it does. What you need
is a program from APPLE2-L called CFT (Change File Type). You shouldn't have
any trouble getting this program to run when you exec it. Just brun it and
it asks you for the file name that you want to change and the new type for it
(BIN, SYS, BAS, TXT, etc.). Just choose the type and most of the time take the
default starting address it then prompts you for ($1000, $2000). Some times
this has to be changed too if the file is a BIN. For example: the starting
address for Kermit 3.79 is 4096.

To all who responded to my questions about enhancing my older //e, thanks.
I probably will get the enhancement, eventually, though it has been
suggested that perhaps our VAX is not doing EBCDIC/ASCII conversion
correctly. In any case, I appreciate your input and your generosity
with information. If anyone out there has had similar problems, please
let me know.

Thanks again.

I installed the ][e enhancement kit myself this morning. Since it was the
first time I have removed chips, I was very slow. Took about 40 min.
Directions were adequate. A chip extractor was very helpful.

There is often a big spread in prices. My kit came thru an ad in _A+_
(Programs PLUS, <$50 + $4 shipping) tel:800-832-3201)
