[comp.sys.apple] LASER 128 info needed ASAP

ees@antique.UUCP (Gene Sampieri) (03/21/88)

Can anyone provide me with feedback on the LASER 128 apple 2c/e compatible
from Central Point???? I need info by Fri. 3/25 as a friend is redy to
buy. The cannot really afford the full price of a 2e and a 2c is still
pushing it. They want to stick with apple vs. IBM pc(compatible) since
thiss is still the unit used by most schools in the area (NJ 3-12).

Thanks

I have been using a Laser128 for about two years to run an experiment (we
also have IBM AT 339, Apple ][e and ][c, HP85, DEC 11/24). The Laser128 is
a reliable machine that runs most Apple ][ software. It does fine with
AppleWorks (I haven't tried it with Timeout enhanced AppleWorks. It did
have problems compiling Beagle Bros. Macroworks macros, but that was an
old Laser128 macro). The serial, parallel, and mouse ports all work as
advertised. We recently put an AE Timemaster H.O. clock into a slot in
the Laser128 expansion box (a real bargin at $49 + shipping). It works
nicely.

The Laser128 is a very good choice to maintain compatibility with
schools equipped with Apple ][x. Some recent comments on this BB suggest
that problems may be associated with purchasing a Laser 128 from Sears
(reports of long repair times, parts difficulties, no repairs except at
Sears). Mail-order houses advertise regularly. Compare prices (including
shipping, which may be much more than you expect), and source of
warantee service. The magazine _A+_ is a good place to look.

We have had no problems with our Laser128, except when someone unplugged
an external drive with power on. This happened soon after machine was
purchased. It was promptly repaired under warantee.

You may be able to find an Apple ][c on sale at a close price.
Disadvantages of the ][c would be no numeric pad, no parallel port,
no expansion slot. Advantages of the ][c would be memory expansions
from several sources, operation from any 12vdc source (like a car
cigarette lighter jack), service from Apple dealers (but not all. One
in my town informed me that they will no longer service Apple ][),
smaller than Laser128, runs all Apple software that doesn't require
][gs stuff, Applecare service contracts (expensive).
