[net.movies] Movie prices

I don't mind paying a high price to see a good movie at a good theatre along
with a good audience. The trouble is that so often you wind up paying and then
being disappointed. Recently the local paper did a review of the new movie
"Ghostbusters". The reviewer mentioned how it really detracted from the movie
experience to walk in and notice that the theatre had not yet gotten around to
cleaning up the spot where a previous days patron had lost their cookies. They
recommended finding a seat before the lights were turned down.

[I hate high prices]

Beginning on Monday 18 Jun 84 the rest of us can go see Indiana Jones and the
Temple of Doom. This date is six weeks after the release of the film and it
is when Paramount will let the theaters open the shows to the discounted
prices. I don't believe any movie is worth 4.50 (well almost any movie).
In the Portland area we have economy hour (first show of the day, $2) every day,
Monday (all times, all seats, Luxury theatres, $2), Tuesday (all times, all
seats, Moyer theatres, $2), Wednesday (AT, AS, LT, Fred Meyer coupon, $2),
and Thursday (AT, AS, LT, newspaper coupon $1.5) so you can see there is
hardly a reason to pay the ridiculously high price. I wish more people would
boycott the movies until the price went down. That would fix them.

Well, I have said my piece and now I feel better.

I'm not so upset about movie prices as many seem to be.
Do you realize it must be at least 10 years since the
"list" price for a movie went up to $4? The price
has been $4 for a "normal" showing for as long as I
remember. What other form of entertainment (or anything,
for that matter) can make that boast? Virtually zero
inflation!

Hmmmmmm. In the last few years, I remember paying --

$1.75 in the early 1970's
$2.50 starting in 1974
$2.75 starting in 1975-6
$3.00 in 1977-1979
$3.50 - 3.75 in 1979-81
$4.00 starting in 1981 or 82
$4.50 for the more recent "big" movies (STIII for example)

$4.00 is starting to be abnormal. I haven't paid less than $5.00 (except
at the UC Theatre [$3.00]) for quite a while. $5.50 seems to be more the
going rate (in the Bay Area, at least). Might be able to get $4.00 at a
discount matinee.
