[net.movies] censorship of cable

root@vortex.UUCP (The Superuser) (06/21/84)

Nobody has mentioned it here, but the Supreme Court decided earlier
this week that states did NOT have the right to censor or block
the showing of materials on cable television systems when such materials
were provided directly by out-of-state sources (such as via satellite).

Interestingly, the decision was not relating to an old Utah filing, but
to that of another state which tried to block the showing of certain
advertising on a cable outlet. The decision applies to both commercial
and non-commercial satellite programming, including movies.

Editorial:

One shudders to think of the ramifications of a more conservative
Supreme Court to various aspects of our personal liberty, given the
many close decisions now coming from the court.
