Dave-

In your bitnet messages I found a person inquiring as to how they could connect
2 joysticks to a standard apple II (pre - gs). I have the answer. Several
companies (usually advertized in the back of Nibble, A+, etc.) offer special
cables which plug into the joystick port of an Apple II, and allow it to
run 2 'sticks. One of my friends back home who owns a II+ has one, and it's
quite nice to have for a little head to head ONE-On-ONE by Electronic Arts
(one of the programs which supports the device). Could you forward this
message to INFO-APPLE? If anyone has any questions about WHERE, etc. I can
be reached through bitnet (RBREWER@WPI.BITNET), or drop a line to the
INFO-MAC listing, which I recieve for my MacBB here at WPI.

Yesterday I wired by 16-pin connector to two joysticks, PDL(0,1)/BTN(0,1)
for Joystick#1 and PDL(2,3)/BTN(2) for Joystick#2 (Thanks to Dave Lyons for
the help). The joysticks function just fine. The problem that I have run into
is that the game with which I first tried to run two the joysticks doesn't
appear to access the buttons correctly.
When playing Archon (1), I found that although the movement was great,
the buttons were accessed as BTN0 for Joystick#1 and BTN1 for Joystick#2.
This gave to playing the second joystick as such: one hand on the joystick
and the other on the closed apple (or the opponent's second button :-)). And
if you have an opponent who -really- likes to play fair, he/she can press
their second button at random times to screw you up.
Anyway, is this a standard? Or is this something that Electronic Arts
did before they knew better (and Archon 2 is fixed?)? How did they handle
this in ONE-On-ONE?
If it is a standard, but re-routed within the 2-stick cables, I can fix
BTN0 of Joystick#2 to BTN1 of the 16-pin, but this would screw up those
1 joystick games which require 2 buttons.

Oh well, anybody know anything ?
Okay, now, do you know anything relevant to THIS ? :-}

Apple only gave us three paddle buttons. I don't really understand why.
(must have been decided by Woz when making one of the first Apples.)
