Does anyone out there have software that quickly and painlessly backs up a hard disk? It seems that ProAPP got confused when I told them I had an Apple //GS and they sent me all sorts of neato Mac software. Why don't I just use the Finder you ask? Well, I tried that, and it took several HOURS and still haven't got a complete backup (only 4 meg used on my HD). As of right now, I'm not known to the LISTSERV thing, and it may not be a good thing for me to do right now until I know of a gateway from ARPA to BITNET (WISCVM is going away...) SOOO, just post it on the net or mail to me directly. Thanks David Whitney, MIT '90 Still learning about my Apple //GS {the known universe}!ihnp4!think!whitney and all of its secrets. Glen Bredon's Prosel has a hard disk backup utility (along with about a dozen others) for $40. Send your check or money order to Bredon at 521 State Rd. Princeton, NJ, 08540. The software analyzes the disk and tells you how many floppies you will need to back it up. The floppies must be formatted. The process is not fast but you can back up a 20 meg drive in an hour or so. Rick Fincher ranger@ecsvax

Didn't get much of an answer when I asked this before, so I'll try again. Does anyone know of any software available for backing up a hard disk? The hardware is an Apple SCSI card (old style) and an Everex 40meg drive. Everex had plans to come out with some, but now appears not to. My dealer had also heard the report that Apple was going to come out with some partitioning software (presumably also backup utilities) with the revised SCSI card (and also guessed the upgrade would be free) but doesn't have any details. I understand that Apple has a backup program, called, appropriately enough, "Backup 1.1". There is also a "Backup 1.1.1" version, which you should use if you are using versions of Prodos 8 1.3 and higher. I also believe (no guarantees on this) that your dealer is supposed to give you a free ROM upgrade for your Apple SCSI card to (1) enable you to use the Apple SC CD-ROM (how perceptive of them to think that you might use the interface for such an item), and (2) to prevent your Apple SCSI drive from being accidentally reformatted by a sloppy program making Smartport calls and assuming that your hard disk is a 3.5" floppy. You can see the wise-and-wonderful Open-Apple magazine for details on this little "bugger". -Russell Buyse. UUCP: {allegra,ihnp4,uiucdcs,ctvax}!convex!buyse
