[comp.sys.apple] Terminal Emulation

I need some real down home instruction on terminal emulation. I currently use
AE.Pro for all my telecommunications but the documentation is really sketchy
(to me) on just what terminal emulation gives/would give me. Since I've seen
a lot of discussion on this net about VT-100 emulators, I'm hoping some one
can enlighten me. I have figured out that terminal emulation is supposed to
provide the user with some enhanced interface capabilities such as improved
cursor positioning but how this is achieved escapes me. Does terminal
emulation provide for pseudo-function keys? The terminal I use at work
(connected to a VAX 11/780) has special functions available from the keypad
keys which I would like to make use of when I'm on-line from home via-modem.
Also, I have seen references to 'term cap' in several messages here that seem
to relate to implementing more effective emulation. Can some adventurous soul
explain this as well.

I'll appreciate any info provided and take no offense at how elementary you
may think you have to make your explanations.

I am running a news site in Milwaukee Wisconsin using Xenix Sys V rev 2.2.1
and have also been running a small gbbs.pro bbs on my Apple //e. Recently
many of the users on the gbbs.pro board have been asking many questions as to
what is a good terminal program for there //e's and //c's that they could
use to easily access my Xenix System and take full advantage of all the
features that it has to offer. AE Pro has been metioned alot but I have
personally used AE Pro in the vt52 mode and there are some programs on the
Xenix System that AE in vt52 mode will not handle properly. Now I ask you
Apple Users, "what is the best terminal program for a //e //c type of
machine when it comes to good terminal emulation?" Are there any good PD
term programs with these features?

Please respond if possible to this personally, via the route below.

Thanks

People looking for a good VT-100 terminal emulation should try Kermit 3.82.
I've used it with both vi and XEDIT, and I have had no problems. Moreover,
the price is right.
