I just purchased two used Apple 5 meg ProFile hard drives (no docs or controller cards). I haven't tested them yet, and I'd be grateful for any info or help anyone could give me concerning: - Sources for controller cards and documentation. - Set up and formatting tips. Do these need special software? Mike Yellin Bitnet: Sparks@Drycas Arpa: MY0L@andrew.cmu.edu

The only ProFile controller I know of is Apple's. The only generally available documentation is Apple's typical worthless "here's how to plug it in" manual. Apple seems to think its customers are all morons. > - Set up and formatting tips. Do these need special software? The ProFile can be formatted ("initialized") by Apple's ProDOS operating system. It then serves as just another ProDOS disk.

There is no special software needed, buy you can only use ProDOS with it. Formatting can be done with Filer, Copy ][+, etc. Unfortunately, this isn't a hard format (i.e. it just writes a blank catalog on the disk). I'm not sure how to do a hard format, or if it's even possible. -Paul Wenker -MECC prw@meccsd
