The film *Le Dernier Combat* (The Last Battle) is a French SF film without subtitles or dubbing. However, it doesn't need them, since there is no dialogue in the film (and come to think of it, no monologue either). Perhaps the simplest way to describe the film is to ask you to imagine a fusion of *The Road Warrior* with David Lynch's *Eraserhead*, and then add a pinch of Samurai film as well. Maybe a slight touch of *A Boy and His Dog*, too. The film is shot in black and white, and shows us a vision of an apparently post-apocalyptic Earth with remnants of technology all over the place that people use in interesting ways in an effort to survive. There is less of the violence that permeated *The Road Warrior*, and more of an examination of the kinds of lives and struggles that I think would be more typical of such a time. It is not a completely satisfactory movie, but in many ways I thought it was better than *Android* that was released earlier this year. Real SF'ers should go out of their way to see this film. Others may also want to see it if they liked the films named above. George Otto AT&T Bell Labs, Whippany ------------------------
